Apple Now Offers “Free App of the Week” on iOS App Store

Cut the Rope: ExperimentsApple hasn’t historically been too generous with freebies, especially when it comes to the App Store, which the company maintains with a pretty much hands-off attitude. But that may be changing, with a new “Free App of the Week” section now available.

As noted by TouchArcade, Apple is now offering a “Free App of the Week” section in the iOS App Store, first announced by the official App Store Twitter account in a post on Thursday. It appears that Apple may now be working in conjunction with developers to offer a new freebie each week.

The concept isn’t new -- Amazon’s own Appstore actually offers a different Android app free every single day, although as you might imagine, the quality of most of those apps tend to be rather sketchy. But occasionally, good apps do get added to the mix.

Likewise, there are plenty of free app deals to be had on Apple’s iOS App Store, and apps dedicated to offering freebies have cropped up in recent years such as Appoday. Apple has also dabbled with offered free apps such as Jetpack Joyride via Facebook, but the Free App of the Week section of the App Store is something new.

The initial Free App of the Week offering is Cut the Rope: Experiments, available in both iPhone/iPod touch (normally 99 cents) and HD iPad versions (normal $1.99). Be sure to download both versions and grab this deal while it lasts.

Apple has also introduced a new “Editor’s Choice” to both the iOS and Mac App Stores, with large banners pointing customers to apps that Apple feels are worthy of some extra love and attention.
