Another Tuesday without new Apple products, so you’ll have to settle for today’s Camera RAW Compatibility Update while you examine supposed iPhone 5 parts that have leaked onto the internet, all while downloading a couple of updates to our favorite iOS apps. Ready to proceed? Then here’s the latest for this terrific Tuesday, May 22, 2012.
iPhone 5: Cue the Front Panel Part Leaks
With all the rumors of a taller iPhone 5 on the way, it was just a matter of time until the inevitable part leaks started showing up. And so they did, right on schedule, on MacRumors today. The image you see above is supposed the front panel of the next iPhone, and no, you don’t need to have your eyes checked -- the images do appear to confirm a taller 3.95-inch display. While the parts appear legit, let’s not forget that sometimes these things work their way into the supply chain by an overzealous component supplier, so… grain of salt, folks. The report also cites a 4.1-inch iPod touch is on the way, although that doesn’t make a lot of sense if the iPhone 5 will be slightly smaller. New parts are also showing up for the home button flex cable and front and rear camera modules, so knock yourself out examining those to see if they’re real.
TiVo Stream Brings Content to iOS, But Only for Premiere Customers
Apparently tired of seeing competitor Dish uses its Sling technology to beam live or DVR content to mobile devices, TiVo today announced their own low-cost IP set-top box to share content with other televisions in the home, coupled with the new TiVo Stream for delivering the same to tablets and smartphones. “TiVo Stream seamlessly delivers the content available on a consumer's TiVo Premiere or Premiere Q DVR to alternative screens such as iPads and iPhones,†the press release reads. “Unlike similar offerings in the market, this is the first product to enable streaming or download of shows simultaneously to multiple portable devices without interrupting what's playing on the television. The power of TiVo Stream enables users to quickly transfer shows to their mobile device for viewing outside the home.†No pricing or availability information has been released, but details are promised “in the coming months.â€
Hulu Plus 2.5 Update Adds iPad Retina, Improved AirPlay Mirroring
We love us some Hulu Plus -- since ditching satellite more than a year and a half ago, it’s been the best eight bucks we spend each month catching up on most of our favorite TV shows. But we were kind of bummed when the new iPad came out and the gang at Hulu didn’t get with the program and update their app with Retina Display graphics. (To be fair, 95 percent of the app looked great -- it was just the occasional graphic that looked pixelated or funky.) On Monday night, Hulu Plus for iOS got an update to version 2.5, and it was a fairly extensive one. All users can now browse and discover new shows by genre and play them with a re-engineered, optimized video player, while the iPad gets an “updated, nicer, more graphical user interface†and yes, for the new iPad, Retina Display support. The app also includes “improved AirPlay mirroring and HDMI support†from the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S and up, but sadly there’s still no direct AirPlay support. But hey, we’re just a stone’s throw from perfection now, and that ain’t bad.
Apple Releases Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.13
It’s not a software update worth tripping over your own feet to get right away, but Apple today pushed out Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.13, an 8MB file for Mac OS X 10.6.8 and OS X Lion 10.7 or later. The update “adds RAW image compatibility for the following cameras to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11: Canon EOS-1D X, Nikon D800E, Nikon D3200, Olympus OM-D E-M5, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF5 and Sony Alpha SLT-A57.†Okay, scratch that first part -- if you own one of the aforementioned cameras, it probably is worth tripping over your feet in the rush to open Software Update. So, you know what to do...
ComicBook! Hits Version 1.5 with New iPad Retina Display Support
3DTOPO Inc. has announced an update to its slick ComicBook! app for iOS. Named as the iPad Photo App of the Year by Apple in 2011, ComicBook! version 1.5 brings Retina Display support for the new iPad, while also offering resolution independent output of comic pages to PDF format for the first time. The included Sketch and Comic filters are now clocked at 56 percent faster, while a new Toon filter has been added to the mix as well. Last but not least, ComicBook! now offers a library of more than 600 additional classic comic styled “sticker†graphics available as an in-app purchase. ComicBook! 1.5 is a free update for existing users and $1.99 for everyone else, now available from the App Store.
