Yahoo! Gets Into Browser Business with Axis, Syncs Desktop to iOS

Yahoo! AxisBilled as “a search browser,” Yahoo! is attempting to step up their game with Axis, a new browser extension for the desktop that syncs data with a free iOS app, all in the name of smarter, faster search.

Yahoo! has introduced Axis, a new web browser app for iOS that “redefines what it means to search and browse the web on your iPhone, iPad and even your desktop.” While Axis isn’t a dedicated desktop web browser, Yahoo! is providing browser plug-ins for Safari, Chrome and Firefox on the Mac and PC, which work hand-in-hand with the full iOS client built on Apple’s Mobile Safari.

“Axis offers the only one-step search experience that allows you to enter your search, see and interact with the results, and find what you need without ever leaving the page you are on,” the app description reads. “Plus, it includes rich, visual snapshots of each result so you can preview the site before you visit it. Axis finds your answers fast and always keeps you moving forward.”

Best of all, Axis “works with your favorite desktop browser (via a plug-in) to automatically connect your online experiences across all your devices. Your bookmarks and recently visited pages are always available wherever you need them. Set a bookmark on your iPad and it will automatically appear on your iPhone and desktop, or seamlessly jump from one device to another and pick up from wherever site you left off.”

Yahoo! Axis is a free download from the App Store and the universal app works equally well on the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. The Axis website includes the link to download the plug-in to your browser of choice, and the whole shebang is absolutely free.
