How to Create a Photo Book

Now let’s take those design muscles you flexed while making your journal and push them a little harder. Using iPhoto on a Mac, you can create your very own book and have it shipped right to your door. (And once you know how to make a book, it’s a cinch to create a calendar or letterpress card in iPhoto as well.)

1. Choose the Kind of Book

While viewing any of your photo albums, click Create in the lower-right corner and choose Book. Next you’ll need to decide exactly what kind of book you want. Pick a size (11x8.5” or 13x10”), a format (hardcover, softcover, or wire-bound), a theme (options include Picture Book, Family Album, and Old World Travel), and a background color. An example of what your book will look like is updated as you choose your options, and you can check what those options will cost in the lower-left corner. Once you’ve set up the book exactly how you want it, click the Create button in the lower-right corner.

2. Place Photos

You’ll be taken to a screen that shows all the blank pages of your book. Double-click a page to zoom in on it, and click the Photos icon in the lower-right corner to bring up the photos column. At the top of the column you can pick which library to pull images from. When you see a picture you like, simply drag it onto one of the frames on the page template. Click and hold a picture to reposition it within its frame, or use the slider that appears above the photo to zoom in or out. You can even add simple effects to the image from the photos column such as sepia, antique, and black and white.

3. Tweak the Layouts

If you want to change the number of photos on a page, or you want a different layout that better fits the shapes of the pictures you’re using, click the Layout button at the bottom right to bring up the Layout column. From there you can use the layout pull-down menu to view different sets of page templates sorted by the number of photos they support--you can even place a single photo over an entire two-page spread. The Layout column also includes various background color options.

4. Finish up

Continue placing photos and customizing layouts for all your book’s pages. From the All Pages screen you can grab and drag pages to place them elsewhere in the book, and you can add more pages by clicking the Add Page button in the lower right. When you’re done, simply click the Buy Book button at the bottom center of the screen. You’ll be shown the book’s details and pricing, plus shipping options, before you confirm your purchase.
