Want to Buy a New iMac or Mac Pro? You May Have to Wait Until Next Year

Mac Pro 12-core 2012 modelApple may have gone notebook crazy at the WWDC 2012 keynote on Monday, but Mac desktop lovers were not amused by the company’s half-hearted Mac Pro refresh -- and judging from the comments of executives in Cupertino, the next generation of desktops may not arrive until 2013.

MacRumors is reporting that new Mac desktop models may not arrive until next year, which effectively makes this the year of the Mac notebook. Mac Pro lovers did get an extremely modest refresh on Monday, but the upgrade not only didn’t take advantage of newer Intel Xeon E5 chips, it completely avoided the addition of Thunderbolt or even USB 3.0 as well.

So what’s happening here? That’s what New York Times journalist David Pogue wanted to know as well, so he asked an unidentified Apple executive following the WWDC 2012 keynote on Monday.

“Many Apple observers also wonder if Apple thinks that desktop computers are dead, since not a word was said about the iMac and Mac Pro,” Pogue wrote in his column on Monday. “An executive did assure me, however, that new models and new designs are under way, probably for release in 2013.”

That certainly sounds like Apple doesn’t plan to release new desktop models anytime soon, although on the “glass is half full” front, it sounds like the Mac Pro isn’t being completely thrown off the train.

In fact, a MacRumors reader took it upon himself to shoot an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook on that very subject and received a rather reassuring reply.

“Our pro customers are really important to us...don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year,” Cook responded.

Good news for those of you who are patient… but if you’re not (like, say, us), you’ve already placed an order for one of those swanky new MacBook Pro with Retina Display models to tide you over.
