RIM Hoarding Cash Until BlackBerry 10 Bailout

AppleInsider is following up on the devastating fiscal Q1 2013 report from BlackBerry maker Research in Motion this week, which saw an operating loss of $308 million during the three months. According to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, RIM's latest round of layoffs is likely part of a strategy to hang onto what little cash it has left -- $2.2 billion as of this quarter. "While it is painful for us to see layoffs, it is necessary for the company's survival," Wu explained. "We believe a key risk is how much cash the company uses with its 5,000 in headcount reductions by the end of (fiscal year 2013)." That will be particular crucial now that is BlackBerry 10 OS and hardware has been pushed back to the first quarter of next year -- a move that has many putting RIM on death watch, although they were probably wise to do so, given that Apple's next iPhone will be arriving in the fall.
