How to Transfer Music from Your iPod to Your New Mac

Got a relative, friend, or acquaintance who is having some trouble getting the hang of their Mac or iOS device? Tear out this page and forego the headache--we’ll take care of it from here!

While it’s always a thrill to bring home a new Mac or iOS device, it’s a bummer having to move all of your data over from an older computer or mobile device. This is especially tricky when you want to sync up iTunes on your new computer and have not yet transferred over your library. Fortunately, you can do so from your iPod. Here’s how.

What You’ll Need:

>> iPod or iOS device

>> Latest version of iTunes

>> Music Rescue ($17, http://bit.ly/eVsYR7)

1. iTunes Purchases

Enter your account name and password to begin syncing your iTunes purchases.

From iTunes, click Store > Authorize This Computer. If your iPod has music bought on multiple accounts, you’ll have to authorize your Mac for each account. Connect your iPod. It will warn you that it is synced with another iTunes library. Click Transfer Purchases.

2. Ripped CDs

Ripped CDs can be easily transferred over.

For ripped CDs, select your iPod in the iTunes sidebar, click the Summary tab, and select “Manually manage music and videos.” Now open the iPod in the Finder and drag the iTunes folder from the iPod to the Music folder on your Mac. Finally, go to File > Add to Library in iTunes.

3. Music Rescue

Music Rescue is a worthy app for those with massive media libraries.

To copy your music from an iPod or iPod touch to your Mac, you’ll need some external software, like Music Rescue (http://bit.ly/eVsYR7). It costs $17, and there is a free trial version. As well as transferring your music to a new Mac, it’s a useful way to back up your music library in case of an emergency.
