InDesign Users on 2012 Ivy Bridge MacBooks Plagued by Crashes
Although we haven't noticed this problem on our own MacBook Pro with Retina Display, InDesign users have been filling up Adobe's online forum with crashing problems since the Ivy Bridge-era notebooks were released in mid-June.
AppleInsider is reporting that Adobe InDesign users have been experiencing problems with the application crashing on MacBooks running Ivy Bridge, and the issue appears to be something Apple changed with OS X Lion 10.7.4.
"At this time it appears the update is removing an API we use to control our use of system icons," Scott Worthington of Adobe technical support writes. "At present the solution appears to be to rollback the update for the software to continue to function as expected."
Unfortunately, that's not an option for users of brand-new models including the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which ship with 10.7.4 preinstalled and are technically unable to run an earlier version.
Users afflicted by the issue have noted that "InDesign would crash when trying to delete a page that has content, and also when packaging a file." Prior to crashing the entire program, InDesign attempts to throw up a warning box which is blank.
The problem seems to manifest itself in both Creative Suite 5 and Creative Suite 6 versions of InDesign, and Adobe appears uncertain whether the forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion update will provide any relief for users.
"We're taking this issue very seriously," Worthington adds. "I wish we had more to share at this time but I'll be sure to share what comes down the line from the engineers relating to solutions or any workarounds they can find."
At least one user discovered they could get InDesign working properly again by restoring their 2012 MacBook back to factory settings, but avoiding Apple's MacBook Pro (Mid-2012) Software Update, which includes the OS X 10.7.4 patch.
