The dog days of August are upon us, but there's still plenty of time to get some fun in the sun before the leaves start blowing into autumn. Apparently an awful lot of you are out there playing Temple Run, which racked up quite an impressive landmark this week. Oh, you didn't hear about it? Temple Run Hits 100 Million Downloads in Only a Year
It may not quite be the Angry Birds level of fame, but Imangi Studios' Temple Run is (literally) giving those pigs and birds a run for their money when it comes to mobile gaming. The company today announced the first anniversary of Tempe Run's debut on the App Store, which has since racked up more than 100 million downloads during those 12 months. Of these, 68 million are from the iOS camp, with another 32 million coming from Android users. That equates to a combined time of 54,000 years shaved off the life of its players, which amount to 13 percent of the U.S. population. To celebrate, Imangi is making its pre-Temple Run titles free for a limited time, while a new update to their (in-app purchase) cash cow adds Retina Display graphics for the iPad as well as more achievements and the ability to enable or disable specific powerups.
Pulse Teases Something Cool "Coming Soon" -- But What Is It?
The folks at Pulse News Reader are teasing something, with a mysterious tweet from the company's Twitter account today. "It's coming," the brief tweet reads. "Be the first in line." A URL is included to a "coming soon" page showing the app's debut on iOS in 2010, Android in 2011 and a question mark for 2012, while the background shows photos of famous tech founders including Microsoft's Bill Gates and Apple's Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. What does it all mean? We haven't a clue, but the website includes a field for adding your email address to "sign up to learn what's coming." Or you could just wait until it arrives and read about it here. Your choice.
Ticket to Ride Adds First New Digital Map Pack in 7 Years
If you're already a fan of the game Ticket to Ride, you might want to check for some updates today. That's because developer Days of Wonder has added its first new digital; map pack in almost seven years. The $3.99 in-app purchase, Legendary Asia, is now available on the iPad, Mac or PC through Valve's Steam Play or from the browser-based version. Pocket Gains Safari Extension, Update Chrome Extension
Fans of the "read later" service Pocket (previously known as Read It Later) got a nice surprise on Wednesday as the company rolled out new extensions to make it easier to save web articles from your web browser. The big news is an all-new extension for Safari, but Pocket is also pushing an update to the existing Chrome extension and even tossed in an updated bookmarklet for users who prefer to kick it old school. And although it's not new, Firefox users haven't been forgotten, either. All of this goodness is available directly from the Pocket website, so get clicking and save those links!
"A" is for App Updates: Amazon Mobile 2.0, Apple Store
Although most of Apple's focus has been on the Mac for the last few weeks, iOS is certainly not forgotten, with a ton of updates swinging through its virtual doors. This week finds Amazon Mobile 2.0 hitting the App Store, finally allowing Subscribe & Save shoppers to grab and extra five to 15 percent off thousands of eligible products (complete with free shipping), as well as Shop by Department for narrowing your searches. Sadly, these features have only come to the iPhone and iPod touch for now, which brings us to Apple Store 2.3, a new update out today which adds the ability to have iWork apps preinstalled when you buy a new Mac, as well as "performance enhancements" to make your shopping experience better than ever. Still no universal update for the iPad, though, sorry...
