After delaying the launch of a Windows RT tablet, Acer is now ready to make the jump. Acer has been outspokenly critical of Microsoft's decision to launch its own brand Windows 8/RT hardware, but that isn't the only reason the OEM has yet to release a Windows RT tablet of its own. The Taiwanese computer maker decided it was best to take a wait-and-see approach, allowing Microsoft to be the guinea pig. Apparently satisfied with what it saw, Acer says it plans to release a Windows RT tablet of its own sometime later this year. ITWorld said it spoke with Oliver Ahrens, president of Acer's Europe, Middle East, and Africa operations, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It was there that Ahrens revealed plans to launch a Windows RT slate, though his company admits Microsoft still needs to do work on the usability of the OS. Why wait until now? According to Ahrens, Acer didn't want to launch a product that only ended up selling 20 units a day, as he claims happened to one of his competitors. "It's not a rat race. We could have released it already," Ahrens said. In addition to a Windows RT tablet, Acer plans to launch up to half a dozen smartphones this year.
