Less than a week after saying it would no longer produce 7200 RPM hard drives for notebooks, Seagate today announced the launch of its third generation hybrid drive family, now called SSHD (solid state hybrid drive). There are three new models in all, including one for laptop PCs (Seagate Laptop), a 7mm high drive for Ultrabooks and ultrathins (Laptop Thin), and for the first time, a variant designed for desktops. In terms of real-world performance, Seagate claims its SSHDs can add as much as 30 percent to total system performance regardless of the processor. While on the topic of performance, Seagate says its SSHD technology is up to 5 times faster than a standard 5400 RPM notebook hard drive. Paired with Windows 8, Seagate touts a reduction in boot times to less than 10 seconds, which is comparable to a full fledged solid state drive (SSD). "Seagateâs engineers have really out done themselves this time. Our new SSHDs serve up your favorite content with the lightning-fast performance you have to experience to believe.
