Monday Recap: iOS 6 Beta 3, InDesign Fix, Steve Jobs on Yelp, Lumia 900 Price Cut
Microsoft took the wraps off its upcoming Office 365 products at an event earlier today, but there's plenty of other tech news keeping us busy here today as well. Steve Jobs pleading with Yelp not to sell to Google? Check. iOS 6 Beta 3 now available? Check. OS X Mountain Lion released to the public? Sorry, not yet. Just wanted to make sure you were still paying attention on this manic Monday, July 16, 2012.
Apple Serves Up iOS 6 Beta 3 to Developers
Apple isn't likely to roll out iOS 6 until a new iPhone arrives this fall, but MacRumors is reporting that a third beta of the latest mobile OS has landed for developers today. Build 10A5355d swoops in only three weeks after the previous beta and arrives with similar builds for Xcode Developer Preview 3 as well as Apple TV Software beta 3. The third iOS 6 beta adds Settings for the new built-in Maps app, allowing navigation voice volume changes as well as the ability to display distance in miles or kilometers and set map label sizes to normal or large. A followup report also reveals that iOS 6 beta 3 begins the transition from the older MobileMe me.com email addresses to icloud.com. "Users signing up for new Apple IDs, or enabling Mail on their iCloud account for the first time, will automatically receive an @icloud.com email address instead of a me.com email address," the release notes explain. If you're quite happy with your me.com address, it appears you can continue to use it, but you'll now also have an icloud.com account under the same name also at your disposal.
Adobe Offers Awkward Fix for InDesign Crashes on Ivy Bridge MacBooks
If you've been experiencing crashes running Adobe Design CS5 or later on one of the new 2012 Ivy Bridge MacBook models, relief has finally arrived -- sort of. Adobe today published a tech support note entitled "InDesign Crashes with Blank Dialog Boxes on MacOS 10.7.4" which offers a bit of a janky way to remedy the situation by extracting icon files, opening the InDesign package bundle and copying three files into one of the Resources folder there. It's kind of unimpressive that Adobe couldn't have at least offered up an AppleScript to make this happen automatically, but also disconcerting that they warn you may screw up your ability to update the app as a result of this change. But at least they acknowledge some of this: "The complexity involved with the following steps is known and Adobe hopes to provide a simpler approach to resolving this issue in the future."
Steve Jobs to Yelp: Don't Sell to Google
There are many legendary tales of Steve Jobs, especially in the wake of his death last year. Today, The San Francisco Chronicle has unearthed a new one as part of an interview with Yelp co-founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman. The profile on the executive opens with a story about how he once left a conference call with venture capitalists to take a phone call from Jobs, who urged the young CEO to "stay independent and not sell out to Google." Ironically, the company had already rebuffed Google's offer to buy, "but Steve liked Yelp and wanted to make sure about Google," Stoppelman recalls. "It was a moment where I said, 'This is crazy. What just happened?'" The move clearly paid off, given that Yelp now has a market cap of $1.3 billion -- and the young CEO's 11 percent stake is worth more than $145 million of that.
AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 Slashed to $49.99
Although we'd question buying a Nokia Lumia 900 right now given the fact that Microsoft has already announced the device will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8 later this year, AT&T and Nokia are apparently eager to unload remaining inventory. On the manufacturer's Conversations by Nokia blog, the company announced that the Lumia 900 has now been slashed to a mere $49.99 with two-year agreement, and that includes the "perky new addition" in pink as well as the existing pure white, matte black and stunning cyan models. And all hope is not lost: The device will at least receive a Windows Phone 7.8 update later this year, which promises to bring the Windows Phone 8 home screen to the handset at the very least.
Rare Skype SMS Bug You Probably Didn't Know Existed Will Soon Be Squashed
Over the last week or so, a rare bug in the Skype software apparently started sending SMS text messages to the wrong contact. That sent frustrated users straight to the company's community forums in search of a cure, only to be told their engineers were "currently investigating and hope to provide a solution for this soon." In the meantime, the PR machine fired up and pushed out a quote with a little more detail, which gives hope that the issue will be resolved soon. "We are aware in rare circumstances IMâs between two contacts could be sent to an unintended third contact," Skype told TechCrunch today. "We are rolling out a fix for this issue in the next few days and will notify our users to download an updated version of Skype." Whew! Another crisis averted.
