Microsoft stirred up a hornetâs nest of complaints when they announced Windows Media Center was being decoupled from the main OS, and in typical Microsoft fashion simply, they just left it at that. Now that Windows 8 is upon us however, early adopters have the opportunity to bring the functionality back at no cost until January 31st 2013.
âIf your PC is running Windows 8 Pro and you'd like to get Windows 8 Media Center Pack so you can watch and record live TV with Windows Media Center, you can take advantage of the following special offer,â the site reads. âFor a limited time, get Windows 8 Media Center Pack for free.â
Adding media center back to the desktop side of Windows 8 is done through the âadd featuresâ part of the OS rather than the app store, meaning if you have more than one PC you technically can only use the code on one machine. The offer is one code per email address however, so if you have a few spare kicking around it couldnât hurt to stock up if youâre a media center fan.
The app is still great, but considering that itâs basically being sent out to pasture, we would recommend looking into alternatives sooner rather than later. Itâs still a great piece of software, but will it be in Windows 9? We doubt it.
