The latest version of XBMC takes the media center platform to a whole new level of awesome.
XBMC 12.0, codenamed "Frodo," is now available for public consumption, though we must warn you that nergasms are likely to occur. Just peeking at the list of new features is enough to set one off, and we fully understand why the developers confidently state this latest release will "blow you away." HD audio support, including DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD? Check. PVR support? Check that too. Support for Raspberry Pi and Android? We need more checks.
It's all just the tip of a much bigger iceberg. XBMC 12.0 offers Live TV integration, 64-bit support for Mac OS X (it already exists for Linux), H.264 10-bit (Hi10P) video software decoding for anime, improved AirPlay support, video library tags, advanced UPnP sharing, and more.
This is a huge update, and arguably the most exciting additions are that of support of those $35 Raspberry Pi mini PCs and Google's Android platform.
"The simple fact of the matter is, XBMC for Android might not exist as a working port right now if it weren̢۪t for the decision of Pivos Technology to employ two XBMC Team members full time to make it happen," XBMC said. "Of course, countless other Team Members and non-Team coders have contributed to the code base both before and after that initial decision, but it was Pivos who gave our developers the necessary man hours to make XBMC for Android a reality."
With all the new goodies baked in and support for more platforms, it will be interesting to see where the DIY crowd takes this.
