Third-Party Mac App Adds âRetina Graphics,â But So What?
As rumors persist that Apple will be adding Retina Display to one or more of its Mac products, a curious third-party app has turned up in the Mac App Store that some believe is evidence the rumors are true.
The Next Web is reporting that third-party app FolderWatch has pushed out a new version 2.0.4, which includes âRetina graphicsâ among other improvements. So what, right? Well, the app in question is from the Mac App Store -- not iOS.
Apparently approved by Appleâs minions on Friday morning, FolderWatch is an $11.99 Mac app that promises to âautomatically keep a copy of your project up-to-date on an external drive or a file serverâ -- which doesnât exactly sound like the kind of application that might benefit from a Retina Display update to us.
However, the report really does its best to convince us that Retina Macs are on the way, citing FolderWatchâs position as âan Apple Staff Favorite in June 2011â as evidence that developer Brothers Roloff might have been given a âheads-upâ about a forthcoming Mac push for Retina from Apple.
Well, either that or they read the same rumors we do, maybe.
The Next Web also grabs at straws with the assumption âMac App Store developers could possibly have been notified of a Retina display upgradeâ -- sure, itâs possible, but given the sheer quantity of Apple leaks lately, it seems unlikely that every developer would have zipped their lips on such a juicy addition.
Our gut tells us this is much ado about nothing, but itâs certainly curious that a Mac App Store gatekeeper at Apple would have let the app slip with a âRetina graphicsâ description. Maybe they just got confused and thought they were approving an iOS app? Weâll know soon enoughâ¦
